In this, the second edition of Steel World for 2012, we have a wide selection of topics which I hope you will find interesting. We start with three invited articles: the first by Marc Lambriks and Cees Ten Broek, respectively, of Tata Steel Europe and WorldAutoSteel on ‘Future Steel Vehicle - leading edge innovation for steel body structures’ (pg 477), which describes the WorldAutoSteel FutureSteelVehicle program and is designed to show automakers how the latest and future steel grades and technologies can provide light body structures for electrified vehicles. The second paper by Norrie McPherson from BAE Systems Surface Ships Limited, on ‘Welding automation in shipbuilding and the influence of the materials’ (pg 483), provides an overview of welding automation within shipyards and covers a number of common welding joint configurations, welding options, processes and material selection.
In the peer reviewed section, we have a selection of papers presented in the Sustainable High Temperature Metallurgical Processes and Engineering Materials Recycling Techniques Symposium at EUROMAT 2011. A specific introduction to these is provided by the guest editors: Dr Muxing Guo, Professor Bart Blanpain and Philippe Russo, on pg 948. However, we thought one specific paper entitled ‘Solid state steelmaking (S3 process) by the decarburisation of rapidly solidified carbon iron sheet’ warranted specific industry comment so we invited Dr Chris Macdonald from Tata Steel Europe to comment on its technical feasibility, usefulness to industry, economics and geographic application. His commentary can be found on pg 487 of the Steel World section.
Finally, we have a book review of ‘Sustainable materials with both eyes open’ by Allwood, J M and Cullen J M 2011 written by Mick Steeper (Siemens VAI)
I want to take this opportunity to announce the retirement from the Editorial Board of Dr Amit Chatterjee, formerly of Tata Steel India, Professor Y. K. Shin, formerly of Kookmin University, South Korea and Dr Tony Jones, formerly of Tata Steel UK. All have been Board members for many years, providing very valuable contributions. We have five new Editorial Board members to announce. These are:
Dr Geon Shin, is Vice President and Head of Engineering Research Centre of POSCO, South Korea. His activities cover not only design and engineering of steel plants and nonferrous plants but also off-shore plants.
Dr Satish Kumar Ajmani, presently working as Head Steel and Casting Research Group, Research & Development, Tata Steel India. His main area of interest is physical and mathematical modelling of the ironmaking and steelmaking processes.
Dr Mike Copeland is Technical Development Director within SSI-UK and has been in the manufacturing industry since 1968 in a variety of research and manufacturing and business roles.
Dr Brian Edy, Technical Development Manager at Tata Steel Strip Products, where he has responsibility for extending technical competence across the organisation. He has worked in the materials industry for over 35 years and has held Technical and Senior Managerial positions in a number of organisations.
Dr Norrie McPherson, Welding Engineering Manager for BAE Systems Naval Ships Glasgow yards, covering all areas of welding with a specific objective to maximise automated welding.
