Abstract
Ultrasound is used widely for the detection and characterisation of ovarian lesions both for screening and in the symptomatic female pelvis. B-mode is the first-line tool for detection of masses and provides some initial information relating to whether appearances may be due to benign or malignant pathology. However the use of colour and spectral Doppler imaging and ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) could contribute further information to assist in diagnosis. In this paper, we summarise recent developments in our use of contrast media and Doppler ultrasound. We report on our experience of using Doppler ultrasound to assess ovarian lesions in order to improve pre-operative characterisation and demonstrate that this helps physicians to better classify these lesions. In addition, we have found recently that the use of UCAs aids visualisation of vessels within ovarian masses and allows for differentiation between highly-perfused and non-perfused areas. Such information further assists the clinician to make a more confident diagnosis. In summary, recent technological developments in Doppler ultrasound as well as developments in the use of UCAs undoubtedly improve the potential for sonographic characterisation of ovarian lesions.
