Kinetics of formation at 800°C of ‘Cu 2 S’ on copper under gases containing H 2 S

The kinetics of ‘Cu₂S’ formation on metallic copper in gas mixtures containing H₂S have been determined thermogravimetrically at 800°C. Initially, the linear rate law is observed which can be explained in terms of a mixed mechanism involving transport in the gas phase and a slow surface reaction at the gas/sulphid interface. The forward rate constant determined for this interface reaction is k=6·62×10⁻⁵ mol cm⁻² mol cm⁻² s⁻¹ atm⁻¹.
