Based on some simple calculations and a few estimates, it is demonstrated that the oceans have a stabilising effect on the earth's climate. Any additional incoming infrared radiation will be compensated by evaporation of water followed by infrared irradiation from high clouds into space and by heat flow into the deep sea.
