Abstract
Purpose
An observational study was conducted to identify and evaluate trends in the use of the Internet and social media by pharmacy publications.
Methods
The print and online versions of 10 pharmacy publications were compared at 2 different times separated by 3 years for similarities and differences in content and presentation. Characteristics and functions were evaluated for online publications, including subscription requirements for online access, the dates of online archived material, pre- and postpublication features, e-mail notifications, hyperlinks, and the use of social media and other specialty applications.
Results
Between 2007 and 2010, online functionality of selected pharmacy publications increased in 52% (12/23) of the features assessed; among these expanded features, the median percent increase was 20%. The 2 most prevalent online features among publications in 2007 and 2010 were article availability in portable document format (pdf) and the ability to submit articles online. The online feature most adopted during the study timeframe was the ability to e-mail friends about an article (increased by 40%). In 2010, the majority of publications offered social media or other specialty applications (80%) and required a paid subscription for online access (60%).
Conclusion
Currently, not all available online features have been adopted by the reviewed pharmacy publications. Overall, the online functionality of pharmacy publications was maintained or slightly increased from 2007 to 2010. It is important for publishers to continue to expand their presence on the Internet to improve accessibility to the scientific literature.
The use of the Web by medical publications has been evaluated by a limited number of investigators.1,2 The Web sites of 18 journals pertaining to general infectious diseases (ID) and infection control and hospital epidemiology were evaluated for a set of 24 Web interface characteristics and online features. The authors noted that electronic reference linking, archives, e-mail alerts, and links to external resources are some of the features of electronic journals that users in the ID specialty may find useful. 1 In another study, the Web sites of 138 high-impact print journals were analyzed to characterize the use of online-only supplementary material, functionality of journal Web sites, and the use of rapid-response online letter-to-the-editor features. The authors concluded that journal Web sites offer similar functionality and that the use of online-only articles and supplements was increasing. 2
In a 2008 pharmacy-focused study, the formats of 317 pharmacy-related journals were categorized according to an OA classification scheme. The majority of publications (n = 240) were identified as traditional/non-OA, in which journals did not permit access to content for free and required transfer of copyright or placed restrictions on use. Only 2 journals were considered OA. The authors noted the paucity of pharmacy-focused OA journals and highlighted related concerns, including the potential for suboptimal dissemination of pharmacists' work. 3
The content and features of online pharmacy publications have not been formally evaluated. The objective of this study is to identify and evaluate trends in the use of the Internet and social media by pharmacy publications.

Discussion
The present study found that the online functionality of 10 selected pharmacy publications was maintained or slightly increased from 2007 to 2010. Despite the presence of these publications on the Web, many of the available online features have yet to be adopted. Many of the publications offer social media or other specialty applications and have made a sufficient archive of online content available to readers.
Previous studies evaluating the use of the Internet by publications are limited. The functionality of 138 medical journal Web sites was reviewed in 2005. 2 The authors found that Web sites had similar functionality with an emphasis on linking each article to related material and sending e-mails to readers about an activity related to each article. Despite the significant amount of time elapsed between this analysis and the current study, it appears that pharmacy publications are lagging behind medical publications in the use of Internet technology. Major differences in utilization include the availability of online ahead of print articles (available in 57% of selected medical journals vs 20% of selected pharmacy publications), citation managers (70% availability in medical journals vs 20% pharmacy publications), and hyperlink features (hyperlinks to references from text citations: 94% availability in medical journals vs 20% pharmacy publications; hyperlinks to search engines: 53% availability in medical journals vs 20% pharmacy publications). Also, in contrast to the finding that many medical journal Web sites offer similar functionality, the present study found great variability in the number of online features offered by pharmacy publications.
The main limitations of this study included the limited number of pharmacy-focused journals and online features evaluated. Also, a nonblinded review of the publication Web sites was performed. Because Web sites undergo rapid change, this analysis may not represent the current state of use of the Internet by pharmacy publications.
Potential areas of future study include the heuristic inspection of pharmacy-focused online publications and assessment of reader interest and use of online features. Also, an up-to-date comparison of the use of the Internet by medical and pharmacy publications could be performed to investigate potential disparities between these publication types.
Conclusion
Overall, the online functionality of pharmacy publications was maintained or slightly increased from 2007 to 2010. It is important for publishers to continue to expand their presence on the Internet to improve accessibility to the scientific literature.
