Abstract

Nikolay Leontyevich Volodos, a cardiovascular surgeon, professor, and Director of the Kharkov Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Ukraine, was born on May 15, 1934, in Belorussia. He moved to the Ukraine in 1950 and has lived there since. Professor Volodos graduated from the Odessa Medical Institute in 1958. Following his graduation, he worked as a surgeon in the mining district until 1961. From 1962 to 1965, he studied at the Thoracic and Abdominal Surgery Department of the Postgraduate School at the Kharkov Institute for Improving Doctors Qualification under the direction of the academician Alexander A. Shalimov. In 1965, he was appointed head of the Vascular Surgery Department of the Kharkov Scientific Institute for Research in the field of general and emergency surgery by the Ministry of Healthcare of the Ukraine. In 1992, he founded and was head of the Kharkov Center for Cardiovascular Surgery.
Professor Volodos has on multiple occasions studied abroad. He was often in Paris at the Pitié-Salpětrière Hospital with Professors Christian Cabrol and Iradj Gandjbakhch at the Clinic of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (1992, 1999, 2004, and 2011). In 1992, 2000, 2003, and 2011, he studied at the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University Clinic in Vienna, Austria. He has also visited Professor Lytle at the Cleveland Clinic's Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department in Cleveland, Ohio, during 1997 and 2000.
Professor Volodos has published extensively within the field of endoprosthetic devices for the thoracic and abdominal aorta and iliac arteries, as well as in surgical treatment of ischemic heart disease, surgical management of thoracic and abdominal aortic disease, and surgical treatment and thrombolytic therapy of pulmonary embolism, acute arterial thrombosis, and injury of the arteries.

Professor Igor Huk provided ample opportunity to participate in many international conferences at which Professor Volodos could present his experiences. Professor Huk also helped him contact foreign experts and arrange visits to various clinics.
Professor Frank Veith was one of the first to recognize Professor Volodos' pioneering work and assisted with the publishing of his results in the medical literature.
Professor Jean-Pierre Becquemin has been highly supportive in providing continuous information to Professor Volodos on developments within the field of endovascular surgery and offering opportunities to participate in international congresses.
Professor Roger Greenhalgh recognized Professor Volodos at the Charing Cross meeting in 2012, highlighting Professor Volodos' pioneering work within the field of endografting.
