Abstract

Purpose: The NCI and the NIDDK solicit investigator-initiated applications to promote better understanding of the pathophysiology of bone metastasis, especially as it relates to tumor cell-bone interactions. The overall goal is to delineate the role of bone microenvironment on tumor cell survival and colonization. Collaborative interactions between bone biologists, clinical oncologists, and cancer biologists are highly encouraged. These studies should contribute to a better understanding of the molecular events that account for homing of tumor cells to the bone and generating novel therapeutic reagents. Both the exploratory (R21) and traditional (R01) grant applications will be accepted.
Term/Amount: This RFA will use NIH R01 and R21 award mechanisms. Applicants will be solely responsible for planning, directing, and executing the proposed project. This RFA is a one-time solicitation. Future unsolicited, competing-continuation applications based on this project will compete with all investigator-initiated applications and will be reviewed according to the customary peer review procedures. The anticipated award date is July 1, 2003. This RFA uses just-in-time concepts. It also uses the modular as well as the nonmodular budgeting formats (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/modular/modular.htm). Specifically, if you are submitting an application with direct costs in each year of $250,000 or less, use the modular format. Otherwise, follow the instructions for nonmodular research grant applications. NCI and NIDDK intend to commit approximately $4 million in FY 2003 to fund approximately equal numbers of new R21 and R01 grants in response to this RFA. An applicant may request a project period of up to 2 years for an R21 or up to 5 years for an R01 application. Although the budgets for R01s are not capped, for the R21, a limit of $100,000 (four budget modules) per year is in place. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of Institutes or Centers provide support for this program, awards made pursuant to this RFA are contingent on the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
Contact: Letter of Intent to: Suresh Mohla, PhD, Division of Cancer Biology, National Cancer Institute, 6130 Executive Boulevard, EPN 5038, Bethesda, MD 20892. Prospective applicants are asked to submit a Letter of Intent that includes the following information: descriptive title of the proposed research; name, address, and telephone number of the Principal Investigator; names of other key personnel; participating institutions; and the number and title of this RFA. Although a Letter of Intent is not required, is not binding, and does not enter into the review of a subsequent application, the information that it contains allows NCI staff to estimate the potential review workload and plan the review. Applications must be prepared using the PHS 398 research grant application instructions and forms (Rev. 5/2001). The PHS 398 is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html in an interactive format. For further assistance, contact GrantsInfo: telephone (301) 435-0714, email:
