Abstract

Richard N. Fine, MD, former president of the American Society of Transplantation (AST), was appointed Stony Brook University's dean of the School of Medicine in October 2005. Dr. Fine is the first president in the 23-year history of the AST to be appointed dean during a presidential term. Fine is an internationally recognized teacher and expert in renal transplantation in children. He has lectured and published extensively on clinical issues involving the management of children who require this procedure. He has authored more than 250 publications and edited 11 textbooks. Currently, he serves as editor-in-chief of Pediatric Transplantation. His clinical research studies have involved the use of recombinant human growth hormone to improve growth retardation in pediatric renal allograft recipients.

Fine received a BS from Muhlenberg College in 1958 and an MD from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1962. He is a fellow of the American Board of Pediatrics and the sub-board of Pediatric Nephrology.
