Abstract
The wasp Haplogonatopus hernandezae Olmi (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae) was identified as a biological control agent of Sogatodes orizicola (Homoptera: Delphacidae). The larvae of this dryinid parasitize S. orizicola and the adults are predacious. The life cycle of H. hernandezae was studied under greenhouse conditions (Temperature: 23°C; Relative Humidity: 75.50/0) at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical -CIAT. The average developmental time from egg to adult was 29 days. The egg, larval and pupal stages lasted an average of 4.4, 17.7 and 7.0 days, respectively. Adults lived an average of 10.4 days, Under laboratory conditions, H. hernandezae exhibits thelotoky, a type of facultative parthenogenesis. Parasitism by this dryinid causes sterility in both males and females of S. orizicola. Both the parasitic larvae and the predacious adults of H. hernandezae exhibits preferences for certain nymphal stages of S. orizicola.
