The Journal Editors and Sage were alerted to a discussion surrounding the article on PubPeer.
Concerns were raised about the following figures in the article:
A) Figure 1(k) appears highly similar to Figure 6(E) [1]
B) Figure 1(m) appears highly similar to Figure 6(D) [1]
C) Figure 3(m) appears highly similar to Figure 6(G) [1]
D) Figure 2(i) appears to contain in-image modifications, including duplications and cloned sections
E) Figure 2(i) contains elements highly similar to Figure 2(f)
Sage contacted the authors for comments and requested the raw images underlying the figures. The authors responded to concerns A-D to note that overlapping images had been erroneously published in [1] and that they had requested a correction to the other journal following the concerns raised. The authors explained that they had erroneously used the incorrect images for concerns E-F and requested to correct the figure with updated images. The authors provided the uncropped raw images, but we were unable to resolve the original concerns raised about image reuse (Fig 1-3) and in-image modifications (Fig 2).
Following review by the Journal Editor and due to unresolved concerns about image integrity that call into question the validity of the findings, the Journal Editors and Sage retract the article.
Corresponding author E.M. disagreed with the decision to retract when notified. Authors E.R., E.D., P.N., H.M., B.L., J.B., I.G-I., M.M., A.A., could not be reached. Authors E.D., L.C., K.I. did not respond.
