AOTA Board Expands Vision 2025

At its meeting on October 26 and 27, 2018, AOTA’s Board of Directors updated Vision 2025 in response to a motion from the 2018 Annual Business Meeting that the value of diversity should be more explicit. “The Centennial Vision included the term diverse, which was very powerful,” said AOTA President Amy Lamb, OTD, OT/L, FAOTA. “We agreed with the members that ‘diversity’ and ‘inclusion’ should be specified rather than assumed to be part of Vision 2025.”

The Board also added a pillar on diversity to Vision 2025. The pillars help to further define and communicate the Vision’s core tenets to key stakeholders, including OTs, OTAs, educators, students, consumers, policymakers, and the general public. The previous version of Vision 2025 and the pillars on AOTA’s Web site have been updated to reflect these changes. Vision 2025 now reads as follows:

As an inclusive profession, occupational therapy maximizes health, well-being, and quality of life for all people, populations, and communities through effective solutions that facilitate participation in everyday living.

Pillars

• Effective: Occupational therapy is evidence based, client centered, and cost-effective.

• Leaders: Occupational therapy is influential in changing policies, environments, and complex systems.

• Collaborative: Occupational therapy excels in working with clients and within systems to produce effective outcomes.

• Accessible: Occupational therapy provides culturally responsive and customized services.

• Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity: We are intentionally inclusive and equitable and embrace diversity in all its forms.
