Abstract

Dear colleagues and friends,
I am very glad to invite you to join the XLIII Congress of the European Society for Artificial Organs organized by Prof. Piotr Ladyzynski and his team from Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering, and the International Centre of Biocybernetics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland from September 14–17, 2016.
Prof. Thomas Groth ESAO President
This year's motto of the Congress “Towards Effective, Seamlessly Integrated and Affordable Artificial Organs” represents a wide scale of activities, reaching from new biomaterials with improved functionality, cardiac assist, hemodialysis, apheresis, ECMO, liver support devices to the engineering of tissues and organs including fundamental studies, preclinical and clinical investigations. In this way, the Congress will cover activities in research and development on tissue and organ support and replacements, reaching from bench to bedside.
The Congress organizers could attract the interest of people from many different countries in Europe and far beyond, collecting about 300 abstracts for oral and poster presentations. Special features of this year's Congress are the 19 special symposia that are organized by ESAO Working Group chairmen and other invited chair persons. Here not only themes from all areas of artificial organ support will be discussed but also emerging topics like implantable biosensors, biomimetic devices, bioartificial organs and many others.
I am also very proud to announce that the Congress organizers invited top-class speakers for keynote lectures that will certainly bring interesting new views and insights into different topics related to biocompatibility, cardiac assist devices and surgery, technologies for detecting hypoglycemia and the area of regenerative medicine.
The pre yESAO Congress that will start on September 13 provides a platform for young researchers to meet each other and to discuss their latest research also with more experienced scientists who will contribute with two tutorial lectures.
The ESAO Congress in Warsaw will also provide plenty of opportunities to discuss research results of fundamental and clinical studies with colleagues from biomedical industry, which is an important prerequisite for translating research into clinical application. In this regard, I am also looking forward to our ESAO Corporate Members Symposium where members from biomedical companies will present the latest developments in medical devices.
Those of you who do not belong to the European Society of Artificial Organs yet, are cordially invited to become a member of our society and join our activities on development of artificial organ technology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. We also invite all participants to submit their research results as presented during this Congress to the flagship of our society, The International Journal of Artificial Organs.
Warsaw – the capital of Poland - is a lively town with a lot of interesting and exiting sites. It is a city of many faces blending historical and socrealist buildings with post-modern skyscrapers, and has plenty more to offer like interesting museums, nice cafes and restaurants.
Finally, the hospitality of Polish people is exceptional and well known. Piotr Ladyzynski and his team have planned an exciting social program that will certainly be very pleasurable for all of us.
These are many reasons to attend the XLIII Congress of the European Society for Artificial Organs. I hope to see you there!
A warm welcome,
