Author's Reply to: The Use of Mersilene Mesh for Tendon Elongation in Restrictive Strabismus Due to Graves Disease

We thank Prof. Schittkowski for his valuable addition to our article (1). It is indeed important to report these findings as they may guide clinicians in the choice of tendon elongation material. I have seen some patients in whom, apparently, conventional surgery had been performed in the past using Mersilene sutures. These sutures had eroded through the conjunctiva, just as with the Mersilene mesh reported by Prof. Schittkowski. Apparently, using nonresorbable Mersilene in a region where it is covered with bulbar conjunctiva is not a good idea. These observations confirm that bovine pericardium is a much safer choice than Mersilene for tendon elongation.
