A retrospective single-center analysis of 159 cases.
To investigate differences between male and female patients, as spinal infection (SI) represents a life-threatening condition and numerous factors may facilitate the course and outcome of SI, including patients’ age and comorbidities, as well as gender. To date, no comparative data investigating sex differences in SI is available. Thus, the purpose of the present retrospective trial was to investigate differences between male and female patients.
A total of 159 patients who were treated for a spinal infection between 2010 and 2016 at our department were included in the analysis. The patients were categorized into 2 groups based on gender. Evaluation included magnetic resonance imaging, laboratory values, clinical outcome, and conservative/operative management.
Male patients suffered from SI significantly more often than female patients (n = 101, 63.5% vs n = 58, 36.5%,
Although male patients show a higher incidence for SI, the course of disease and the management is more challenging in female patients. Nevertheless, outcome after 12 months is comparably good. Underlying mechanisms may include a better immune response and dissimilar effects of antibiotic treatment in women. Pain management in female patients is still unsatisfactory after 12 months.
A cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–based anatomical study.
Instrumentation of the thoracic spine may be challenging due to the unique pedicle morphology and the proximity of vital structures. As prior morphological studies have mostly been done in Caucasians, our study aims to determine the optimal pedicle screw size for transpedicular fixation in an Asian population.
A retrospective analysis of 400 patients who had undergone MRI of the thoracic spine was performed. A total of 3324 pedicles were included. Pedicle morphology was graded qualitatively based on the size of its cancellous channel, and quantitatively with the following parameters: pedicle transverse diameter, pedicle screw path length, and pedicle angle. Subgroup analysis based on gender was performed.
Mean pedicle transverse diameter was the narrowest at the T4 (2.9 ± 1 mm) and T5 (3.1 ± 1.1 mm) level. The mean pedicle screw path length progressively increased from T1 (34 ± 4.6 mm) to T12 (47 ± 4.6 mm). The mean pedicle angle was the largest at T1 (34° ± 7.9°) and decreased caudally, to 9.4° ± 3.8° at the T12 level. Females had significantly lower mean pedicle diameter and screw path length than males at every vertebral level; however, they had a larger pedicle angle at T8 to T10. The most common size of the pedicle cancellous channel was more than 4 mm.
Morphological differences in the Asian pedicle suggest that caution needs to be taken during thoracic spine instrumentation, particularly in Asian females who have significantly smaller pedicles. In such cases, the use of alternative techniques or intraoperative navigation may be useful.
Retrospective database.
Although posterior decompression is the most common approach for surgical treatment of degenerative thoracic spine disease, anterior approach is gaining interest due to its advantage in disc visualization. The objective of this study was to compare the intra- and postoperative medical complication rates between anterior and posterior decompression for degenerative thoracic spine pathologies.
A national US insurance database was queried for patients with degenerative diagnoses who had undergone anterior or posterior thoracic decompression. Incidence of intra- and postoperative complications were evaluated on the day of surgery and within 1 and 3 months. Two subgroups were matched based on age, gender, and comorbidity. The association of decompression approach and complications was assessed using logistic regression.
A total of 1459 patients were included, consisting of 1004 patients in posterior and 455 patients in anterior group. Respiratory complications were the most common complications on the day of surgery (8.57%) and within 30 days (17.75%). Matched analysis showed that anterior approach was associated with organ failure, gastrointestinal, and device-/implant-/graft-related complications in all follow-up periods; and with cardiovascular, deep venous thrombosis/pulmonary embolism, and respiratory complications in at least 1 follow-up period. Among respiratory complications, anterior decompression was significantly associated with noninfectious etiologies on the day of surgery (odds ratio [OR] = 1.72), within 30 days (OR = 2.05), and within 90 days (OR = 1.92).
Anterior approach was associated with increased rates of several complications. High rates of respiratory complications necessitate comprehensive preoperative risk stratification to identify those who may benefit more from posterior approach.
Retrospective clinical review.
To assess the use of intraoperative computed tomography (CT) image-guided navigation (IGN) and robotic assistance in posterior lumbar surgery and their relationship with patient radiation exposure and perioperative outcomes.
Patients ≥18 years old undergoing 1- to 2-level transforaminal lateral interbody fusion in 12-month period were included. Chart review was performed for pre- and intraoperative data on radiation dose and perioperative outcomes. All radiation doses are quantified in milliGrays (mGy). Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were utilized for categorical variables. One-way analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey test was used for continuous variables.
A total of 165 patients were assessed: 12 IGN, 62 robotic, 56 open, 35 fluoroscopically guided minimally invasive surgery (MIS). There was a lower proportion of women in open and MIS groups (
IGN and robotic assistance in posterior lumbar fusion were associated with higher intraoperative and total-procedure radiation exposure than open cases without IGN/robotics, but significantly less than MIS without IGN/robotics, without differences in perioperative outcomes. Fluoro-MIS procedures reported highest radiation exposure to patient, and of equal concern is that the proportion of total radiation dose also applied to the surgeon and operating room staff in fluoro-MIS group is higher than in IGN/robotics and open groups.
Secondary analysis of data from the multicenter, randomized, parallel-controlled Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigational device exemption study.
Studies on outcomes following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in individuals with diabetes are scarce. We compared 24-month radiological and clinical outcomes in individuals with and without diabetes undergoing single-level ACDF with either i-FACTOR or local autologous bone.
Between 2006 and 2013, 319 individuals with single-level degenerative disc disease (DDD) and no previous fusion at the index level underwent ACDF. The presence of diabetes determined the 2 cohorts. Data collected included radiological fusion evaluation, neurological outcomes, Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, and the 36-Item Short Form Survey Version 2 (SF-36v2) Physical and Mental component summary scores.
There were 35 individuals with diabetes (11.1%; average body mass index [BMI] = 32.99 kg/m2; SD = 5.72) and 284 without (average BMI = 28.32 kg/m2; SD = 5.67). The number of nondiabetic smokers was significantly higher than diabetic smokers: 73 (25.70%) and 3 (8.57%), respectively. Preoperative scores of NDI, VAS arm pain, and SF-36v2 were similar between the diabetic and nondiabetic participants at baseline; however, VAS neck pain differed significantly between the cohorts at baseline (
ACDF is effective for cervical radiculopathy in patients with diabetes. Diabetes is not a contraindication for patients requiring single-level surgery for cervical DDD.

Hospital records of Lenke 1 AIS patients operated for single stage, posterior-only deformity correction were analyzed. Distal fusion levels recommended by Lenke and PUMC classifications were calculated and were compared with the actual distal fusion levels. The study population was divided based on whether the actual distal fusion levels were in agreement, shorter or longer than those recommended by Lenke classification. Subgroup analysis of Lenke 1C curves was done. The groups were compared with regard to the following outcome measures: Cobb angle correction, postoperative sagittal vertical axis, postoperative C7 offset, and Scoliosis Research Society–22r (SRS-22r) score at 24 months.
The distal fusion levels recommended by the 2 classifications were in agreement in 92 of 104 cases. In all the cases with disparity, Lenke classification recommended shorter fusions than the PUMC classification. No statistically significant difference was observed in the outcome measures—whether the actual distal fusion levels were in agreement, shorter, or longer than those recommended by the Lenke classification or whether or not the recommendations for selective fusion of any of these classifications were adhered to.
Lenke classification can save fusion levels without compromising on treatment outcomes when compared with PUMC classification. Variability in choice of distal fusion levels is not clinically significant at 24-month follow-up.
Prospective cohort study.
Evaluate changes in gait, pain, and psychosocial factors among degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) patients before and 3 months after surgical intervention.
Forty-four symptomatic DLS patients performed clinical gait analysis 1 week before surgery and 3 months after surgery. Patients performed a series of over-ground gait trials at a self-selected speed. Twenty-two matched asymptomatic controls underwent the same battery of tests. Three-dimensional motion tracking was used to analyze gait kinematics. Patient-reported outcomes, gait range of motion, and spatiotemporal parameters compared before and after lumbar decompression with fusion.
Surgical intervention resulted in significant improvements in walking speed (
Surgical treatment of DLS resulted in a faster, more efficient gait in addition to significant reductions in pain, disability, and psychological fear associated with pain and motion. These beneficial changes that we identified early in the postoperative period indicate that patients return to the quality of life they seek early on. Clinical gait analysis provides objective, quantifiable measures of gait parameters that provide new insight into both the preoperative disability associated with DLS and into the early postoperative function of patients during their rehabilitation.
Diagnostic study, level of evidence III.
Low back pain is a common cause of disability among elderly patients. Percutaneous discoplasty has been developed as a tool to treat degenerative disease when conservative management is not successful. Indications for this procedure include low back pain and the presence of vacuum phenomenon. The objective of this study was to describe a new classification of vacuum phenomenon based on computed tomography scan in order to improve the indications for percutaneous discoplasty.
We developed a classification of vacuum phenomenon based on computed tomography scan images. We describe 3 types of vacuum based on the relationship between vacuum and the superior/inferior endplates and 2 subtypes based on the presence of significant subchondral sclerosis. A validation study was conducted selecting 10 orthopedic residents with spine surgery training to analyze 25 vacuum scenarios. Inter- and intraobserver reliabilities were assessed through the Fleiss’s and Cohen’s kappa statistics, respectively.
The overall Fleiss’s κ value for interobserver reliability was 0.85 (95% CI 0.82-0.86) in the first reading and 0.93 (95% CI 0.92-0.95) in the second reading. Cohen’s κ for intraobserver reliability was 0.88 (95% CI 0.77-0.99).
The new classification has shown almost perfect inter- and intraobserver reliabilities for grading the vacuum phenomenon and could be an important tool to improve the indications for percutaneous cement discoplasty.
This was a retrospective cohort study.
When anterior cervical osteophytes become large enough, they may cause dysphagia. There is a paucity of work examining outcomes and complications of anterior cervical osteophyte resection for dysphagia.
Retrospective review identified 19 patients who underwent anterior cervical osteophyte resection for a diagnosis of dysphagia. The mean age was 71 years and follow-up, 4.7 years. The most common level operated on was C3-C4 (13, 69%).
Following anterior cervical osteophyte resection, 79% of patients had improvement in dysphagia. Five patients underwent cervical fusion; there were no episodes of delayed or iatrogenic instability requiring fusion. Fusion patients were younger (64 vs 71 years,
Anterior cervical osteophyte resection improves swallowing function in the majority of patients with symptomatic osteophytes. Spinal fusion can be added to address stenosis and other underlying cervical disease and help prevent osteophyte recurrence, whereas intraoperative navigation can be used to ensure complete osteophyte resection without breaching the cortex or entering the disc space. Because of the relatively high complication rate, patients should undergo thorough multidisciplinary workup with swallow evaluation to confirm that anterior cervical osteophytes are the primary cause of dysphagia prior to surgery.
This was a retrospective review of prospectively collected data.
Few studies have described the relationship between mental health and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after minimally invasive spine surgery. Prior studies on open surgery included small cohorts with short follow-ups.
Patients undergoing primary minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) for degenerative pathology were retrospectively reviewed and stratified by Short Form (SF-36) Mental Component Summary (MCS): low MCS (<50, n = 436) versus high MCS (≥50, n = 363). PROMs assessed were back pain, leg pain, North American Spine Society Neurogenic Symptoms, Oswestry Disability Index, SF-36 Physical Component Summary, and MCS. Satisfaction, expectation fulfilment, and return to work (RTW) rates also were recorded at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 2 years.
Preoperative MCS was 39.4 ± 8.6 and 58.5 ± 5.4 in the low and high MCS groups, respectively (
Despite poorer PROMs preoperatively, patients with poor baseline mental health still achieved comparable results from 3 months up to 2 years after MIS-TLIF. Preoperative optimization of mental health should still be pursued to improve satisfaction and prevent delayed RTW after surgery.
This was a biomechanical study.
Shape loss of surgical spine rods has been implicated as a factor leading to postsurgical loss of alignment correction. Our objective was to compare the degree of shape loss in surgical spine rods of different compositions under physiological conditions that were bent before or after being autoclaved.
10 CoCr and 10 commercially pure titanium (CPTi) surgical spine rods were contoured using a machine press. Five CoCr and 5 CPTi rods were bent before being autoclaved (preoperative bent group); 5 CoCr and 5 CPTi rods were bent after being autoclaved (intraoperative bent group). All rods were immersed in a phosphate-buffered saline bath at body temperature (37.2°C ± 2°C). Changes in radius of curvature were measured at different time intervals over an 8-week course using a high-definition scanner.
Each rod demonstrated shape loss in radius of curvature (range = 1.04-9.99 mm) over the duration of the study. Intraoperatively bent CPTi rods demonstrated the largest shape loss (range = 8.73-9.99 mm; median 9.33 mm;
CPTi spinal rods bent after autoclave may lead to considerable loss of alignment correction. In addition, our results suggest that preautoclave bent CPTi and CoCr spinal rods bent after autoclave may be a more ideal choice of implant because they may provide more resistance to shape loss over time.
Retrospective cohort study.
Complication profiles for lateral approaches to the spine are well established. However, the influence of level of surgery on complication rates and subtypes are less well established. To determine risk factors for complications as determined by level and surgery type in patients undergoing a lateral (retroperitoneal or retropleural approach) to the thoracolumbar spine.
All adult patients undergoing a lateral thoracolumbar fusion with or without posterior instrumentation performed at a single institution were identified. Primary outcomes assessed were presence of complication, complication subtype, and need for reoperation. The primary independent variables were spinal level (thoracic, thoracolumbar, or lumbar) and type of surgery (discectomy or corpectomy). Categorical outcomes were compared using chi-square test. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios for corpectomy status were calculated to determine risk of complication by level.
A total of 165 patients aged 18 to 75 years were identified as having undergone a lateral fusion. Complication rates were 28.6%, 36.4%, and 11% for thoracic, thoracolumbar, and lumbar lateral approach fusions, respectively. Under univariate analysis, patients undergoing lateral approach in the thoracic spine group had significantly higher rates of postoperative complications than those in the lumbar group (
Lateral (retroperitoneal or retropleural) approaches to the thoracic and thoracolumbar spine may be used with complication rates comparable to well-established lumbar approaches. Extent of surgery (corpectomy vs discectomy) rather than level of surgery may represent the primary driver of complications.
This was an ambispective clinical quality registry study.
To evaluate utility of 11-variable modified Frailty Index (mFI) in predicting postoperative outcomes among patients ≥80 years undergoing spinal surgery.
Consecutive patients ≥80 years who underwent spinal surgery between January 1, 2013, and June 30, 2018, were included. Primary outcome measure was rate of major complication. Secondary outcome measures were (1) overall complication rate, (2) surgical site infection, and (3) 6-month mortality.
A total of 121 operations were performed. Demographic metrics were (1) age (mean ± SD) = 83.1 ± 2.8 years and (2) mFI (mean ± SD) = 2.1 ± 1.4 variables. As mFI increased from 0 to ≥4 variables, risk of major complication increased from 18.2% to 40.0% (
mFI scores of ≥3/11 variables were associated with a higher risk of postoperative morbidity in patients aged ≥80 years undergoing spinal surgery. The mFI-associated risk stratification provides a valuable adjunct in surgical decision making for this rapidly growing subpopulation of patients.

To introduce the iliac connectors as fixation options in spinal constructs used for correction of severe scoliosis at locations other than the lumbopelvic region.
Nine patients with severe rigid scoliosis undergoing surgical release and posterior instrumentation in the period between January 2013 and January 2015 were included in this prospective cohort study. Mean age was 18.4 years; 8 had triple structural curves, and the remaining patient had double structural curves. One to 4 offset iliac connectors were used in all 9 patients, increasing screw density by a mean of 6.24 (
Offset iliac connectors can be a valuable tool to increase screw density in correction of severe scoliosis, thus increasing overall biomechanical strength of the final construct.
Retrospective single-center study.
Investigate the effect of posterior instrumentation on the relationship between lordosis and kyphosis.
Surgically treated patients with a minimum of 6 months of follow-up were analyzed. Asymptomatic volunteers served to show the normal anatomical relationship between thoracic and lumbar curves. Patients were stratified based on postoperative instrumentation: “Thoracic Fusion” = complete fusion of thoracic spine; “Lumbar Fusion” = complete fusion of lumbar spine; and “Complete Fusion” = fusion from sacrum to at least T5. Bivariate correlations and regression analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between change in thoracic kyphosis (ΔTK) and change in spinopelvic mismatch (ΔPI-LL; pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis) before and after fusion. Analyses were repeated in “Lumbar Fusion” patients with flexible preoperative thoracic spines.
For asymptomatic volunteers, the natural anatomical relationship between TK and LL was found to be TK = 41% of LL (
The relationship between ΔTK and ΔPI-LL is dependent on level instrumented. “Thoracic Fusion” drives change in LL while this relationship is affected by TK’s natural stiffness in “Lumbar Fusion” patients.
A retrospective multivariate analysis.
To analyze clinical outcomes of surgical treatment and prognostic factors of local failure after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in patients with spinal metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
This study included patients with metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) from spinal NSCLC after radiotherapy who received massive spondylectomy for circumferential decompression of spinal cord and reconstruction of spinal stability in our center between May 2006 and February 2017. Neurological function was evaluated using the Frankel score. Overall survival (OS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Factors with Pvalues ≤.1 were subjected to multivariate analysis for OS by proportional hazard analysis. Values of P<.05 were considered statistically significant.
The mean age of the 55 included patients (36 male and 19 female) was 57.76 ± 8.94 (median 58, range 36-77) years, with a mean postoperative OS of 14.98 ± 14.81 (median 10.0, range 1-84) months. Neurological function was improved in 46 (83.6%) of the 55 patients after surgery. Prognostic analysis suggested that preoperative frankel score (FS) score, visceral metastasis, D-dimer (D-D) level, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were independent prognostic factors for selected patients.
Massive spondylectomy could provide circumferential decompression and improve the neurological function of patients with MSCC from spinal NSCLC after radiotherapy. A preoperative FS score of C/D, no visceral metastasis, D-D <1000 μg/L, and NLR <5 are predictors of better prognosis.
Narrative review.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have emerged as disruptive technologies with the potential to drastically affect clinical decision making in spine surgery. AI can enhance the delivery of spine care in several arenas: (1) preoperative patient workup, patient selection, and outcome prediction; (2) quality and reproducibility of spine research; (3) perioperative surgical assistance and data tracking optimization; and (4) intraoperative surgical performance. The purpose of this narrative review is to concisely assemble, analyze, and discuss current trends and applications of AI and ML in conventional and robotic-assisted spine surgery.
We conducted a comprehensive PubMed search of peer-reviewed articles that were published between 2006 and 2019 examining AI, ML, and robotics in spine surgery. Key findings were then compiled and summarized in this review.
The majority of the published AI literature in spine surgery has focused on predictive analytics and supervised image recognition for radiographic diagnosis. Several investigators have studied the use of AI/ML in the perioperative setting in small patient cohorts; pivotal trials are still pending.
Artificial intelligence has tremendous potential in revolutionizing comprehensive spine care. Evidence-based, predictive analytics can help surgeons improve preoperative patient selection, surgical indications, and individualized postoperative care. Robotic-assisted surgery, while still in early stages of development, has the potential to reduce surgeon fatigue and improve technical precision.
A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Cervical total disc replacement (CTDR) can preserve range of motion (ROM) of the operated spinal segment in cadaver studies. Evidence is less clear in clinical trials. The present study aims to investigate the differences in cervical biomechanics before and after CTDR and its association with heterotopic ossification (HO) development.
Articles that reported the rate of HO and ≥1 difference in cervical biomechanics were included in quantitative analyses. We pooled the mean difference (MD) of cervical biomechanics before and after CTDR. Subgroup analyses and metaregression analyses were conducted to identify potential contributors to heterogeneity.
Of the 599 studies screened, 35 studies were included in the final analysis. In comparison with preoperative values, ROM of the spinal segment inferior (MD: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.74) and superior (MD: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.75) to the surgical spinal segment, functional spinal unit (FSU) angle (MD: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.11 to 3.35), and C2/C7 Cobb angle (MD: 3.49; 95% CI: 1.73 to 5.25) significantly increased after CTDR. In contrast, FSU and cervical ROM at baseline were no different from follow-up. On multivariable meta-regression analyses, HO and ROM-limiting HO were not associated with changes in cervical biomechanics. Single-level CTDR and duration of follow-up were associated with changes in cervical biomechanics.
Our study reported the pooled mean of biomechanics at baseline and final follow-up and their differences. The changes in biomechanics were not associated with the rates of HO and ROM-limiting HO.
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed with the aim of exploring the differences in pedicle screw positioning accuracy, surgical time, length of hospital stay, postoperative back and leg Visual Analog Scale, revision surgeries, and intraoperative radiation time and exposure between robot-assisted technology and conventional freehand technique based on RCTs.
Several databases, including the Cochrane library, PubMed, and EMBASE were systematically searched to identify potentially eligible articles. Meta-analysis was done using STATA 13 software. The odds ratios and 95% CIs were calculated for the studied categories.
Seven RCTs involving 290 patients (1298 pedicle screws) in the robot-assisted group and 288 patients (1348 pedicle screws) in the conventional freehand group were analyzed. The results revealed that grade (A) and grade (A+B) screw accuracies were significantly superior in the robot-assisted group (
It was demonstrated that robot-assisted technology is superior to the conventional freehand technique in terms of grade (A) and grade (A+B) screw accuracies and in the reduction of intraoperative radiation time and dosage. On the other hand, the freehand technique showed superior results in terms of overall surgical duration and revision surgery rates.
A bibliometric review of the literature.
Our objective was to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited publications in the field of endoscopic spine surgery (ESS).
In order to determine the top cited 100 articles, a 3-step approach was employed. First, the 100 most-cited ESS studies were identified using the key phrase “endoscopic spine surgery.” Then, 8 keywords were identified from the 100 studies of step 1 were used to conduct a second round searching in all databases of the Web of Science. Finally, when the results of the first and second steps were overlapped, duplicated studies were removed. The 100 top-cited articles were used for further analysis.
The citation number of the top 100 most-cited articles ranged from 44 to 236 with a mean value of 84.4. The most productive periods were from 2001 to 2010. The majority of publications came from
This bibliometric study is meant to produce a list of intellectual milestones in the field of ESS. This article’s identification of the most influential articles in the field of ESS gives us a unique and comprehensive insight into the development of ESS in the past several decades.
Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Cervical spinal cord compression (SCC) due to degenerative changes of the spine is a frequent finding on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While most people remain asymptomatic, a proportion develop symptoms of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). DCM is an often-progressive neurological disease that can cause quadriplegia. The epidemiology of SCC and DCM is poorly understood. We sought to estimate the prevalence of degenerative cervical SCC and DCM from cross-sectional cohorts undergoing MRI.
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of MRI reports on human subjects older than 16 years with degenerative SCC. A predetermined search strategy was used to identify relevant literature on MEDLINE. Title and abstract screenings were followed by full text screening. Data was extracted and analyzed by fixed or random-effects models.
The present search returned 1506 publications. Following our exclusion criteria, 19 studies were included. Subgroup analysis of 3786 individuals estimated the prevalence of asymptomatic SCC in a healthy population as 24.2% with a significantly higher prevalence of SCC in older populations compared with younger populations and American/European populations compared with Asian populations. Subgroup analysis of 1202 individuals estimated the prevalence of DCM in a healthy population as 2.3%.
We present the first estimates of the prevalence of asymptomatic SCC and DCM. Studies investigating the epidemiology of SCC are heterogeneous in methodology and results. These data indicate the need for more studies into the epidemiology of SCC and DCM performed with consistent methodologies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has obligated physicians to recur to additional resources and make drastic changes regarding the standard physician-patient encounter. In the last century, there has been a substantial improvement in technology, which over the years has opened the door to a new form of medical practicing known as telemedicine.
Healthcare workers from three hospitals involved in the care for COVID-19 patients in the united states were invited to share their experience using telemedicine to deliver clinical care to their patients.
Since the appearance of this worldwide outbreak, social distancing has been a key factor in preventing the spread of the virus, for which measures have been taken to limit physical contact. Because of the ongoing situation, telemedicine has been progressively incorporated into the physician-patient encounters and quickly has become an essential component in the day-today medical practice.
It is feasible to deliver viable spine practice with the use of telemedicine. A proper patient selection of patients requiring virtual treatment versus those requiring in-person visits should be considered.
