This report reviews population studies of child and adolescent mental health carried out in Latin America over the past 15 years. Also considered is the issue of how to meet the needs of children and adolescents who may present mental health problems in Latin America, given that most of them live in poverty in economies that are underdeveloped, providing limited resources.

Ten studies from six different countries were identified that employed some form of randomized sampling method and used standardized instruments for assessment. The authors present a summary of the main characteristics of these studies, highlighting methodological features that may account for differences in the rates obtained.

Overall, a similar pattern of prevalence and risk factors for mental health problems in children and adolescents in Latin American countries emerged. Moreover, rates of disorders in these children are similar to the 15 to 20% found in other countries. These findings are similar to those observed when adult mental health problems are considered. Prevention and treatment strategies are discussed and the peculiarities of the delivery of mental health services for children and adolescents are explored.

Future research needs to focus on understanding of resilience and formal and informal mental health delivery systems of care available in different Latin American countries. Such research has high potential for ameliorating the prevention and treatment of child and adolescent mental health problems in this region of the world.

We examine the association between sexual assault, religion and mental health among male veterans.

We used longitudinal data collected from 2,427 male veterans who received VA outpatient care. Sexual assault was self-reported in the questionnaire. Two dimensions of religiosity were used: organizational (frequency of religious service attendance) and subjective religiosity (the extent that religious beliefs are a source of strength or comfort). Mental health was measured by the mental component summary from the Veterans SF-36 and depression was measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale. A regression model that uses the generalized estimating equation approach for longitudinal repeated data analysis was used.

Based on the baseline data, 96 (4%) patients reported ever experiencing sexual assault. These patients have significantly lower levels of mental health status and higher levels of depression (p < .001). The regression results show that this decrement in mental health and increment in depression associated with sexual assault are in lesser degrees for patients who attended religious service more frequently compared to those who never did (p < .05). Similarly, there is a smaller magnitude of increment in depression associated with sexual assault for those who have a higher level of subjective religiosity (p < .05).

Although the prevalence of self reported sexual assault is low among male veterans, those who reported sexual assault experiences had lower levels of mental health status and higher levels of depression. Further, religion attenuates this association which highlights the important role religion might have in coping with this stressful life event.

The purpose of this study was to determine if primary care provider knowledge of late-life depression, attitudes about treatment of depression in late life, and experience treating late-life depression affect the likelihood internists would prescribe antidepressants to older patients.

This study was a primary care provider survey study. From a pool of 456 eligible mailed surveys, 253 providers completed (55% response rate) a survey assessing provider self-reported knowledge about treating late-life depression with antidepressants, their attitudes about older patients' acceptance and response to antidepressant medications, their professional and personal experience with antidepressant medication, and their comfort with prescribing antidepressants to older patients was created for this study.

Univariate analyses indicated that 75% of primary care providers were knowledgeable about the use of antidepressant treatment in older people, and 86% said they felt comfortable treating depression in older patients. Multivariate analyses indicated that the decision to treat older patients with antidepressants was largely influenced by time to treat patients, provider belief that antidepressants could treat late-life depression, their comfort with treating late-life depression, and having had older patients respond to anti-depressant treatment in the past (R² = .52, p < .001).

This study shows that attitudinal and experiential factors play an important role in the likelihood that a provider will treat an older, depressed patient with an antidepressant, more so than knowledge about how to prescribe an anti-depressant to older patients. Residency programs for primary care practitioners should include education about the efficacy of antidepressant treatment in older people and should involve hands-on experience in treating late-life depression.

To our knowledge, there are no studies investigating the non-cognitive symptoms of patients with dementia such as depression, agitation, or delusions among general hospital inpatients. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of such non-cognitive symptoms among medical inpatients and to analyze their impact on the length of hospital stay and on admission to nursing homes.

The sample consisted of 372 elderly inpatients admitted to four internal medical departments (i.e., not including psychiatric wards) in Austria. Patients were investigated by research psychiatrists using the Clinical Interview Schedule. For the analyses of the non-cognitive symptomatology, only marked and severe symptoms were included. To identify predictors for the length of hospital stay and for nursing home placement, multivariate regression procedures were used.

Of all inpatients, 27.4% met criteria for dementia according to DSM-III-R. Of those with dementia, 27.8% had marked or severe non-cognitive symptoms. A diagnosis of dementia markedly increased the risk for nursing home referral and prolonged the duration of inpatient treatment. Among the demented, both, cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms turned out to be significant predictors for nursing home placement and for prolonged duration of acute hospital stay, even when controlling for other independent variables.

Non-cognitive symptoms occur frequently among medical inpatients with dementia and considerably increase both the duration of inpatient treatment and the risk of nursing home placement. Since such non-cognitive symptoms are treatable, they should receive attention from the hospital staff.

A topic review of current literature was performed. Chief sources included primarily mainstream journals in the fields of urology, psychiatry/psychology, impotence/erectile dysfunction, epidemiology, and internal medicine. MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases were utilized.

Data from clinical studies, trials, and review articles concerned primarily with psychological aspects of the arousal (erectile function) phase of the male sexual response cycle were collected, analyzed, and summarized in this review article.

There has been a shift in how erectile dysfunction has been perceived and treated over the past 30 years. With the current focus now on the very prevalent organic causes of ED, psychological factors are increasingly overlooked, though they remain important to the treatment of the patient as a whole. This article provides a complete, concise review of the interplay between psychological components and erectile function, reviews the work-up and diagnosis of psychogenic ED, and discusses treatment methods.

Erectile dysfunction is a prevalent problem that can affect, and can be affected by, psychosocial aspects of a man's life. Medical or pharmacological interventions are often appropriate to treat ED, but the psychosocial aspects should not be ignored. It has become easier for practitioners to put aside patients' psychosocial and interpersonal concerns regarding sexual health. Clinicians provide the best possible treatment if they recognize that erectile dysfunction is a complex, multifactorial disorder, and treat accordingly.
