The growing numbers of individual and social problems associated with drug abuse necessitate new approaches in drug-testing systems. Equally, drug abusers may attempt to invalidate drug testing using different methods such as adulteration, dilution and substitution. This study aims to investigate tampering methods commonly used by Turkish substance-using probationers and evaluate their effects on toxicological drug-testing results. Initially, probationer urinary screening test results and laboratory substitution documents were evaluated to investigate the dilution and substitution attempt. Additionally, an experimental study was carried out by using readily available household products (bleach, vinegar, drain opener, eye drops) for adulteration. The effect of these agents was investigated for 11‐nor‐9‐carboxy-Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC–COOH), amphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). It was determined that probationers preferred unbranded products (syringes, nylon bottles, etc.) for urine substitution. To detect dilution, screening test results were evaluated along with creatinine values. The variability of mean creatinine values can change the rate of the before-negative and after-positive ratio. For adulteration method, the high amounts of bleach provided false-negative results for THC–COOH and amphetamine, but spiking in any concentration of bleach affected MDMA results, causing a slight increase. Vinegar did not affect the THC–COOH and amphetamine results. However, false-negative results were observed for MDMA, with high amounts of vinegar-spiked urine samples. Drain opener was added in large quantities, and false-negative results were observed for all analytes. Visine eye drops did not have any effect on THC–COOH or amphetamine, but a high quantity of eye drops had a slight decreasing effect for MDMA.
Age estimation is a vital aspect of the process of identification. Studying the appearance and fusion of long bones is one of the most commonly used methods for age estimation. Most research conducted on age estimation using the study of the appearance and fusion of ossification centres has been roentgenographic in nature. However, X-ray examination and computed tomography examination are associated with ionisation radiation. The present study investigated the use of ultrasonography (USG) as a means of visualising ossification centres of the elbow and wrist joints for age estimation in 31 Maharashtrian boys from Ahmednagar, India. The Schmeling et al. method of grading was used to score the fusion of ossification centres, and simple and multiple linear regression models were developed for age estimation. It was found that the ossification centres of the elbow and wrist joints followed a set pattern of maturation and fusion. The ossification centres of the elbow joint fused before the ossification centres of the wrist joint. The fusion scores of proximal radial epiphyses had the highest correlation with the decimal age of the participants, making its fusion the best indicator among all the ossification centres examined in this study for age estimation. Regression models to estimate age were generated using all the ossification centres. USG was found to be suitable for the purpose of age estimation based on ease of examination, minimal ionisation risks, its non-invasive nature and clear visualisation of ossification centres.

The use of DNA as evidence in judicial trials in Pakistan is fraught with issues and challenges, including sampling, profiling, analysis, inclusion and exclusion criteria, insight and oversight mechanisms, invasion of personal privacy, constitutional safeguards and court admissibility issues. These problems have diminished the significance of this robust forensic evidence and hindered the creation of a central database in the country. This paper discusses these issues and introduces suggestions for the inclusion of DNA as significant evidence in the criminal justice system of Pakistan.
Short tandem repeats (STRs) are widely used as DNA markers in paternity testing and criminal investigations because of their high genetic polymorphism among individuals in population. However, many factors influence genetic variations of STRs. Therefore, understanding STR information within individual populations could provide database and scientifically reliable STR genotyping for forensic genetic purposes. We aimed to examine allele frequencies of X-STRs, including some forensic parameters, in a northern Thai population. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted by collecting X-STR data from unrelated individuals living in a northern region of Thailand. The allele frequency and forensic parameters – for example polymorphism information content (PIC), power of discrimination in females and males (PDf and PDm), mean exclusion chance (MEC) and haplotype frequency – were calculated. The Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was analysed. A total of 132 alleles were observed, with corresponding allele frequency ranging from 0.0064 to 0.4904. The PIC of all loci was >0.6, representing high genetic polymorphism, except DXS8378 and DXS7423. Notably, DXS10135 was the most diverse loci with the highest PD and MEC, while DXS7423 was the least polymorphic marker with the lowest PD and MEC. The highest haplotype diversity in male data was on linkage group III (DXS10101-DXS10103-HPRTB) by 0.9895. The genetic distance analysis demonstrated that the northern Thai population had a close relationship with Taiwanese (DA = 0.023). There are no significant deviations among the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium except DXS10148. This study has established a northern Thai X-STRs reference database to be used as a tool for forensic genetic purposes.
Being wrongfully accused of criminal offences can lead to serious negative consequences to those wrongfully accused and their families. However, there is little research on the psychological and psychosocial impacts of wrongful accusations. We conducted a systematic literature review to collate the existing literature, searching four electronic literature databases and reference lists of relevant articles. Data were extracted from 20 relevant papers, and thematic analysis was conducted on the data. Eight main themes were identified: loss of identity; stigma; psychological and physical health; relationships with others; attitudes towards the justice system; impact on finances and employment; traumatic experiences in custody; and adjustment difficulties. The psychological consequences of wrongful accusations appear to affect the lives of those accused seriously, even after exoneration or overturning of convictions. Strategies for improving public perception of wrongful convictions should be explored, and specific mental-health systems should be established to support those who are wrongfully accused.
Jasenovac was a camp run by the Ustaše Supervisory Service (UNS) of the Independent State of Croatia during World War II. It was located approximately 100 km south-east of Zagreb on the banks of the Sava River. Although the purpose of, and number of deaths in, the camp have been debated, it appears that a significant number of Serbs, Roma and Jews died and/or were executed at this site between 1941 and 1945. The site demonstrates that not all detention camps at this time were controlled by the German government and that cultural/religious groups other than the Jews were detainees. Balkan mass graves may therefore derive from different conflicts at different times, and so establishing accurate conclusions from excavations often requires a verifiable and plausible context and an understanding of burial processes.
The biological aspects and economic impact of coronavirus disease 2019 have been extensively discussed in the literature. However the social, cultural and legal aspects of the pandemic, especially regarding the dignity and rights of the deceased and their families – have so far received little attention. This communication discusses restrictions and violations of the rights of the deceased and their families and their privileges to carry out funerary practices and rituals during the pandemic caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
While deaths caused by interactions with dogs in medico-legal situations most often involve trauma from attacks, in certain circumstances, deaths may occur from sharing environmental hazards that the animal has been exposed to during attempted rescues. Search of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 16-year period from 2004 to 2020 found three such cases, including two women aged 46 and 61 years who were both killed in separate incidents after being struck by vehicles when they attempted to rescue dogs that had strayed onto busy roads. The final case was a 53-year-old man who drowned in a river while trying to rescue his dog. A review of Internet databases and news sources revealed other cases where would-be dog rescuers had drowned in rivers and the sea or had succumbed to hypothermia in frozen lakes and waterways. Other hazardous situations involve house fires, falls from heights, electrocution and envenomation. The characteristic features of these cases are of a dog (often a pet) getting itself into, or being found in, a dangerous situation, with owners or bystanders then attempting rescue. The dangers of the situation are either ignored or underestimated by the rescuers who often also misjudge the capacity of dogs to survive/self-rescue. Cases may therefore be encountered in forensic investigations where death or serious injury has occurred during attempts to protect an animal from particular types of environmental dangers. Unlike the owners, it is not infrequently documented that the dogs have survived the danger unharmed.

Two cases of recently diagnosed oesophageal squamous-cell carcinomas in men, both aged 72 years, are reported that resulted in rapid clinical deterioration and death from upper-airway occlusion and haemorrhage, respectively. In the first case, direct growth of the tumour from metastatic deposits in the paratracheal lymph nodes through the wall of the trachea resulted in lethal acute airway occlusion. In the second case, local extension of the tumour through the wall of the oesophagus into the adjacent aorta resulted in an aorto-oesophageal fistula which led to catastrophic and fatal haemorrhage. Although rare, oesophageal squamous-cell carcinomas may cause unexpected death due to quite different mechanisms, and result in the need for a detailed medico-legal assessment.
