Abstract

You see a 37-year-old man in your afternoon surgery with an acute exacerbation of low back pain. He works as a painter and decorator and feels unable to work due to his current symptoms.
An SC1 self-certificate is used if the patient is in employment and the employers do not have their own self-certification forms
An SC2 self-certificate is used if the patient is self-employed or unemployed
If the patient is still incapable of work after 28 weeks, they make a claim for Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
Statutory sick pay (SSP) is payable for a maximum of 40 weeks
SSP is subject to tax and National Insurance contributions
