Abstract

This 300-page book is intended primarily as a reference resource for occupational therapy students focusing on traditional crafts. Crafts are described in detail and the therapeutic value of each is assessed. The authors assert the use of crafts to distinguish the practice of occupational therapy from other health professions. There are many references from occupational therapists and other medical sources supporting the use of crafts as a relatively inexpensive modality to improve patient health.
The book suggests methods for evaluating each craft for suitability and modifying them to the clients’ abilities and tastes. The authors encourage the therapist to gain personal experience with each craft before developing a plan for the use by a client, including the physical and mental ability required by the project and the time and cost of its completion. There are discussion questions throughout this well-illustrated book, and each type of craft is accompanied by extensive resource references. Appendices provide formats for documentation of therapy activities and outcomes.
Crafts and Creative Media in Therapy is a comprehensive review of various craft options and is suitable for assessing the applicability of each craft therapy to client circumstances.
