FVD President’s Award
Dr. Jan Bellows, President of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry announces Ron Anderson, President of Dentalaire, as the recipient of the 2020 Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry President’s Award. Ron began his career and commitment to veterinary dentistry approximately 30 years ago, partnering with former President of Dentalaire, John Voskuhl. He began his involvement with the Veterinary Dental Forum with Dentalaire as one of the original ten vendors who exhibited at the annual meeting. Ron was appointed to the Board of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry as the only original member representing industry.
Ron began focusing on support of humane societies with donations of equipment and on-site training through the Make Me Smile Program (MMSP), a Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry subcommittee of the Outreach Committee. The MMSP’s first shelter program working with Board-Certified Veterinary DentistsTM included on-site training and equipment donation to Martinez Animal Shelter in Contra Costa County, CA in 2013. Since that date, there have been seven shelter programs throughout the country provided generous equipment donations.
COVID restrictions have limited travel to California recently. Ron has helped with efforts to update equipment and provide training to Canine Companions for Independence Veterinary Clinic in Santa Rosa, CA. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs to the disabled community.
To date, equipment donations include approximately 60 dental machines and twenty imaging systems!
To quote Ron: “With my passion for all dogs and cats, I have been fortunate enough to fall into something that I love, along with being able to work with dedicated veterinarians. It has been personally gratifying to me.”

British Veterinary Dental Association
The BVDA held possibly the world’s first 2 stream Virtual Veterinary Dental Conference on 23/9/20, in conjunction with The Webinar Vet. The day was a great success with 169 delegates from 15 countries around the world live on the day, and another 100 (so far) registered to watch the recordings. The big advantage of a virtual 2 stream conference is that delegates can watch one stream live, and the recordings of the other stream later – or watch the whole recorded event at leisure, one presentation at a time.
The Keynote speaker was Professor Iain Chapple, head of the Birmingham Dental School, on the subject of the links between periodontal disease and systemic disease. He also presented on the current world classification of periodontal disease.
Other talks in the Essential stream covered dental examination, oral masses, malocclusions, radiology, case reports, surgical extractions, and an introduction to advanced dental procedures.
The Advanced stream presentations included canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis, the latest insights in companion animal oral health, TMJ research, hidden dangers within dental units, and oral histopathology.
The post event feedback was universally positive, based upon the smooth running of the program on the day, and the quality of both the speakers and their presentations. The BVDA is extremely grateful to all our speakers for making this Conference such a success.
The event could not have taken place without the generous support of our partners on the day. The BVDA would like to record their thanks to our Premium Partner Mars Petcare, and also to our other partners, Accesia, A. Somerville Ltd, Covetrus, Eikemeyer, Hills, iM3, MAI, and The Veterinary Tissue Bank. We would also like to thank The Webinar Vet for all their hard work for months beforehand setting it up, and ensuring it ran seamlessly on the day.
Those who missed the event can still access all 13 hours of quality CPD at https://www.thewebinarvet.com/pages/bvda-scientific-day-2020-tickets/
