Abstract

Answer A. Offer serological testing for coeliac disease.
Serology is usually the first investigation performed as it can be done in primary care. However it is not sufficient to make the diagnosis. New guidelines for children suggest that it may be possible for a specialist to diagnose coeliac disease without the need for a biopsy but this is not currently the case in adults. Throughout all the investigations it is important that the patient continues to consume gluten-containing diet, in order to get accurate results.
