A 70-year-old female patient comes to see you with a 3-day history of left iliac fossa pain and loose stools. She is known to suffer with diverticulosis. She has been feeling intermittently feverish over the past 24 hours. She feels nauseous but has not vomited. She does not have any rectal bleeding.
On examination, her temperature is 37.4°C and her pulse is 86 beats per minute. On abdominal examination, the abdomen is soft but there is tenderness in the left iliac fossa. However, there is no guarding or rebound tenderness. Bowel sounds are normal on auscultation.
