Abstract

Answer C. Arrange for immediate re-catheterisation
There are indications for catheterisation in men and women and specific techniques should be used. There are occasions when referral to a urologist for catheterisation is recommended:
Severe phimosis Meatal stenosis Urethral perforation Trauma Persistent bypassing High pressure chronic retention Failed catheterisation Acute urinary retention Failed trial without catheter Those with long-term catheters to be considered for a suprapubic catheter, operative management or intermittent self-catheterisation
Catheter maintenance solutions are unlikely to be successful. There is no need to send a further mid-stream urine off and antibiotics are not indicated. A conveen is not appropriate with a history of retention. Checking urinary pH will not help solve the immediate problem.
