PURPOSE. To test the effectiveness of seven therapeutic nursing interventions in alleviating powerlessness in chronically ill clients was tested.
METHODS. Part I of the study tested the Holistic Power Model, developed by the researchers, in a pilot study. Part II compared the effectiveness of seven therapeutic nursing interventions to decisional control in alleviating powerless in experimental (N = 25) and control groups (N = 25).
FINDINGS. An inverse relationship was found between power resource scores and the perception of powerlessness. There was a significant difference in perceived powerlessness between the experimental and control groups following intervention.
CONCLUSIONS. Utilization of specific therapeutic nursing interventions is more effective in alleviating perceived powerlessness than utilizing the interventions of decisional control.
