The purpose of this study was to examine the factors contributing to achieving successful aging (SA) among the Korean older population and identified the strength of each factor’s contribution to SA. We extensively searched 4 Korean and 3 English online databases, extracting a total of 64 studies for the analysis. Finally, 42 associated factors and 347 correlation coefficients were found, which were then categorized into 5 domains: functional, psychological, familial, social, and demographic. The psychological domain had the highest effect size. This was followed, in descending order, by the social, functional and familial, and demographic domains. Importantly, the familial domain, which has not been explored in many existing SA models, emerged as a notable predictor. This study is meaningful in terms of understanding one of the minority older populations more deeply and providing stronger evidence for developing evidence-based intervention programs for Korean older adults.
This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with vaccination coverage among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients in Korea using the fourth to the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES IV, V, VI). A total of 16 812 subjects aged 40 years and older who underwent spirometry and had an “influenza vaccination history” were analyzed. The vaccination rate of middle-aged (40-64 years) COPD patients was only 31.9%; whereas, the vaccination rate of elderly (65 years and older) COPD patients was 80.0%. The results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that older age (odds ratio [OR], 1.12; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.09-1.14), poor self-rated health status (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.14-1.95), regular health check-up (OR, 2.61; 95% CI, 1.93-3.51), married marital status (OR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.42-0.96), and household income below average (OR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.53-0.98) were associated with influenza vaccination. More attention and targeted interventions are required to improve the influenza vaccination rate of COPD patients.
We assessed the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices on antibiotics through a questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey among the general public in Bhutan. Of the 692 participants, 52.6% (364) were females with a mean age of 34.2 years. More than half of the respondents showed unsatisfactory knowledge varying significantly from 23.1% to 69.6%. Cotrimoxazole (septran) was the least known while amoxicillin was the most known antibiotics assessed. Two-thirds of the responsents (267) knew that inappropriate use of antibiotics could lead to antimicrobial resistance and 89% (319) were aware of the need to complete the antibiotic courses. In bivariate analysis, satisfactory knowledge was associated with the education level of graduate and higher as compared with no education. This study revealed unsatisfactory knowledge and attitude but satisfactory practices on antibiotics use among participants. Efforts are needed to improve public awareness on antibiotics. Enforcement of regulations on sale of antibiotics over the counter needs a revamp.
We evaluated anthropometric characteristics and physical fitness in 556 Melanesian adolescents from rural and urban New Caledonia to build health education programs focused on physical activity. In 2013, body weight, height, skinfold thickness, lean body mass (LBM), percentage fat body mass (%FBM), physical fitness (power, agility, speed, maximal aerobic speed [MAS], estimated VO2max), and self-reported physical activity were assessed. Rural adolescents were significantly shorter and faster, had lower weight, %FBM, LBM, and power output and similar MAS and VO2max, and were more active than urban adolescents. Rural girls were significantly shorter, had higher MAS and VO2max, and were faster and significantly more active than urban girls while similar %BFM was observed in both groups of girls. Rural boys showed significantly lower height, weight, %FBM, and power and were significantly faster and more active than urban boys. In conclusion, rural Melanesian adolescents are more active, with good physical fitness (especially boys), although high %FBM was noted (especially in girls).
This study used microbial indicators to assess the hygiene status of 383 migrant food handlers from 3 urban cities in Peninsular Malaysia. We explored the relationship between acculturation and dietary intake by gender for 500 Mongolians residing in South Korea. The high acculturation (HA) group females consumed more fish and shellfish, vegetables, beans, and rice, and less meats, flours, and oil than the low acculturation (LA) group did. However, there was no statistical difference in food group intake between HA and LA group males. HA group females showed higher intake of carbohydrates, fiber, sodium, potassium, calcium, vitamin A, and folate compared with LA group females. However, only folate and vitamin B2 intake was statistically different between HA and LA group males. Acculturation and gender interactions were found for the consumption of meats, flours, fish and shellfish, beans, and vegetables. The findings from this study have implications for developing customized nutrition intervention programs by gender for immigrants.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDCs) in 2015, which included several goals and targets primarily related to nutrition: to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger and to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. In the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) member countries as a group, infant and child mortality were reduced by more than 65% between 1990 and 2015, achieving the MDG target of two-thirds reduction, although these goals were not achieved by several smaller countries. The SDGs are broader in focus than the MDGs, but include several goals that relate directly to nutrition: 2 (zero hunger—food), 3 (good health and well-being—healthy life), and 12 (responsible consumption and production—sustainability). Other SDGs that are closely related to nutrition are 4 and 5 (quality education and equality in gender—education and health for girls and mothers, which is very important for infant health) and 13 (climate action). Goal 3 is “good health and well-being,” which includes targets for child mortality, maternal mortality, and reducing chronic disease. The Global Burden of Disease Project has confirmed that the majority of risk for these targets can be attributed to nutrition-related targets. Dietary Guidelines were developed to address public health nutrition risk in the Asia Pacific region at the 48th APACPH 2016 conference and they are relevant to the achievement of the SDGs. Iron deficiency increases the risk of maternal death from haemorrhage, a cause of 300000 deaths world-wide each year. Improving diets and iron supplementation are important public health interventions in the APACPH region. Chronic disease and obesity rates in the APACPH region are now a major challenge and healthy life course nutrition is a major public health priority in answering this challenge. This article discusses the role of public health nutrition in achieving the SDGs. It also examines the role of APACPH in education and advocacy and in fulfilling the educational needs of public health students in public health nutrition.
